Lassen Camping
Lassen is one of the most beautiful and least-known national parks, ideal for a summer getaway back to nature, offering pleasant hiking and camping amid beatuiful surroundings. Mount Lassen is one of the few active volcanos in the USA, 30 miles in distance from north and west. Lassen is a volcanic park with lots of thermal activity – fumaroles, mud-pots, volcanic peaks, stunning lakes and lots of wildlife and Lassen Camping.
Mount Lassen is relatively close by and certainly worth an easy day trip from Rippling Waters. Mt Lassen is a plug-type of volcano, extruded slowly upward from underlying volcanic vents below. Lassen is my personal favorite. They’re dogs, not kids – so yes I am allowed to have a favorite – just don’t tell Shasta. Lassen is a very cool park, with lots of neat things to see and do.
Lassen is 10457 feet high and located in the southern Cascades. Unlike other, more well-known attractions — Yosemite, for instance, Lassen is refreshingly uncrowded, and nowhere near as remote as you might think. Mount Lassen is in Shasta County and Mount Shasta is in Siskiyou County. Lassen is located forty-five minutes east of Chico off Highway 32 near Butte Meadows, California. Lassen Volcanic National Park – Cinder cones, bubbling mud, stunning views and forests: Lassen is all about hiking.

Lassen’s got some great hiking. During the summer my family and I like to do a “Moon light” hike to the top. Once the snow is melted (not safe when there is snow), you choose a night with no clouds and a full moon. You can hike the entire trip up in a couple hours from one of the upper parking areas. You should bring a flashlight, but with the moon you don’t really need it.
Quite a view from the top with everything lite by moonlight. It’s pretty popular so there are always some other groups doing the same, but I’ve never seen it at all crowded. Well worth trying!
