Borneo, Malaysia

Borneo is the largest island in the Asian Archipelago. Sabah is the most primitive Malaysian state. It is featured in this video. Islam is the state religion, but Malaysian guarantees religious freedom.

Orang-utan is Borneo’s most renowned wild primate. “Orang” means man and “tan” defines jungle. Thus, the term “wild man” of Borneo became a common idiom describing the island.

Regionally, we will be viewing former British North Borneo, established in 1881. A Sultanate, Sandakan was its capital from 1884 until 1947. Scotch and German soldiers served the reigning Sultan.

Naturalists find the area to be one of the greatest displays of wild tropical scenery in Asia, and one of the most satisfying for nature lovers.

Exciting day excursions from Subah’s state capital – Kota Kinabalu – include countryside villages, banyan swamps, and jungle trails.

Open, vibrant Sunday markets feature local artifacts, farm produce and imported wares. Surprisingly the island is the top traveled location for the British and a new adventure land for American travelers.
